The HPC Challenge Awards demonstrate that, in addition to
achieving successive top-place rankings on the June and
November 2011 editions of the TOP500 list measuring LINPACK
computational speed, the K computer is evaluated very
highly in all-around performance as a general-purpose

development by RIKEN and Fujitsu.

Earth Simulator Wins First Place in the HPC Challenge Awards

represent frequently used numerical operation patterns in scientific
computing. Among them, the Global FFT is widely utilized in important

- Added optimized variants of RandomAccess that use Linear
Congruential Generator for random number generation.
- Made corrections to comments that provide definition of the
RandomAccess test.
- Removed initialization of the main array from the timed section of
optimized versions of RandomAccess.
- Fixed the length of the vector used to compute error when using MPI
implementation from FFTW.
- Added global reduction to error calculation in MPI FFT to achieve
more accurate error estimate.
- Updated documentation in README.

- Added a new variant of RandomAccess that uses Linear Congruential
Generator for random number generation.
- Rearranged the order of benchmarks so that HPL component runs last
and may be aborted if the performance of other components was not
satisfactory. RandomAccess is now first to assist in tuning the code.
- Added global initialization and finalization routine that allows to
properly initialize and finalize external software and hardware
components without changing the rest of the HPCC testing harness.
- Lack of hpccinf.txt is no longer reported as error but as a warning.

Two new exploratory lists also are now open for submissions. The Open
Green500 will allow supercomputers to use a combination of
single-precision and double-precision to generate a correct
double-precision result for LINPACK. “We hope that this will stimulate
innovation by allowing hardware manufacturers to explore novel
architectural solutions while numerical analysts compose novel
algorithms to perhaps create a synergistic multi-grid method for
LINPACK,” Feng said. Similarly, the second exploratory list will use
the High Performance Computing Challenge (HPCC) benchmark for its performance results.

HPCC 1.3.1 Released

We are pleased to announce the release of HPCC 1.3.1. This is a bug-fix release that fixes two bugs that were introduced in version 1.3.0. The bugs were in PTRANS and FFT components of the code. Please use this version of the code instead of 1.3.0.
Summary of changes
- Update version of HPL (import of HPL 2.0 source code)
- Replaced 32-bit Pseudo Random Number Generator (PRNG) with a 64-bit one.
- Removed 3 numerical checks of the solution residual with a single one.
- Added support for 64-bit systems with large memory sizes (before they would
overflow during index calculations 32-bit integers.)
- Introduction of limit on FFT vector size so they fit in a 32-bit integer
(only applicable when using FFTW version 2.)

2008 Cluster Challenge Results

The second Cluster Challenge was held a few weeks ago in association
with SC08 in Austin and, with the cycling theme, has been described as
the “Tour de France of SC”. The peloton consisted of 7 teams gathered
from 4 countries to build and run a supercomputer on benchmarks and
applications for 46 straight hours. The level of activity associated
with the event is amazing with individuals working intensely until they
exhaust themselves and slump in place to sleep (and I have photos to
prove that).

With the petaflop barrier broken, is it time to change the benchmark?

At a presentation at the SC08 semi-annual supercomputing conference in
Austin, Texas, an engineer with Oak Ridge National Laboratories in
Tennessee who is an expert on the Linpack benchmark, suggested that the
methodology used to determine supercomputer performance using Linmark
may be behind the times. Specifically, Jack Dongarra -- the man
credited with introducing the High-Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark
to the Top 500 program -- suggested that as supercomputers get bigger
and can store more data, their lag times increase exponentially. This
implies that making existing supercomputers bigger and faster
eventually leads to a point of diminishing returns.
