Unable to use all the Hardware counters - PAPI v5.0.1

Postby gany47 » Tue Feb 05, 2013 4:51 am

Hi all,

Below is my working setup

PAPI v5.0.1
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 (Ivy Bridge) Family : 6 Model : 58
Ubuntu 12.04 (precise) 64 bit / Kernel Linux 3.6.0-030600rc7-generic

"papi_avail -a " shows the number of available hardware counters to be 11

Number Hardware Counters : 11

However, whenever I add more than 5 events to the event_set, I am getting the PAPI_ECNFLCT error. Can someone help me overcome this and utilize at least 8 or 9 counters if not all 11.

Thanks,
Ganesh

Yes, Sandy and Ivy Bridge processors technically have 11 counters. No, you're not likely to be able to use them all.
We described this situation in some detail in a tech note here: http://icl.cs.utk.edu/projects/papi/wiki/PAPITopics:SandyFlops.
Let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks a lot for the pointer. Very useful note indeed for the platform I am working on.
