Papi attach to another process

Hi,

I am trying to run multiattach and zero_attach from the ctests dir of the latest PAPI (4.0.0 with papi400patch2.diff) tarball but I get the error:
Error in PAPI_attach: PAPI_ESBSTR
I am running linux 2.6.32 with the built-in performance counters support. Is it expected to work or is there any known bug in PAPI_attach?
I am trying to write my own monitoring application that attaches to a target application for which it gathers information from the performance counters but I get the same error.
