Papi installation on Itanium

Postby sharp3 » Mon Apr 12, 2010 11:27 pm

Hello.

I am trying to install papi on an Altix SGI machine with Itanium processors. The linux kernel is 2.6.16.27. After building the code I attempt to test the installation by running "make test". I get the following error message:

cd ctests; make CC="gcc" CC_R="gcc -pthread" CFLAGS="-I.. -g -DSYNC_READ -DSTATIC_PAPI_EVENTS_TABLE -Wall -D_REENTRANT -D_GNU_SOURCE -I./libpfm-3.y/include -DITANIUM3 -DUSE_COMPILER_TLS -DALTIX -DPFM30 -DPFMLIB_OLD_PFMV2" TOPTFLAGS="-O0" SMPCFLGS="" OMPCFLGS="" NOOPT="" LDFLAGS=" " LIBRARY="../libpapi.a " serial forkexec_tests overflow_tests profile_tests multiplex_and_pthreads shared ear range

I'm assuming that perfmon is not linked correctly because that is the only special note about Itanium builds in the installation guide, however configure should automatically detect those issues and there are no complaints from the compiler.

I've tried to reproduce the error that you are seeing on an SGI Altix 4700 with dual-core Intel Itanium II Montecito 1.6 GHz. The kernel version on this system is 2.6.16.60.
I don't get the same output when running "make tests".

What's the output from the configure step? Can you send me the config.log and Makefile?

Thanks,
heike.

Hi!

Thanks for the response.

I discovered that another user was running a Ooprofile daemon that was locking a resource, which caused the error. Thanks for the reply though!

Hi there,

I've built PAPI, and successfully ran the installation tests, 'make test', and 'make fulltest'. A few tests fail (fork_overflow, byte_profile), but all others are either skipped or pass.

I'm having an issue when attempting to build PAPI into a PARSEC benchmark application. I can compile the benchmark fine, but at runtime PAPI fails to initialize.

The output of PAPI is:

PAPI Error: PMU type 1 is not supported by this substrate.

The error message originates from papi-4.0.0/src/linux-ia64.c, line 1117.

The SGI Altix 4700 machine that I am using has 32 Itanium2 cores, (Montecito architecture). Below is a dump of 'uname -a'.
Linux sgi-2 2.6.16.27-0.9-default #1 SMP Tue Feb 13 09:35:18 UTC 2007 ia64 ia64 ia64 GNU/Linux

I notice that perfmon identifies the PMU as PFMLIB_GEN_IA64_PMU, as opposed to PFMLIB_ITANIUM2_PMU or PFMLIB_MONTECITO_PMU. The latter is what I would have expected to see.

I've added config.log and Makefile information below:

This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.

It was created by PAPI configure 4.0.0, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.63. Invocation command line was

$ ./configure --prefix=/home/bmiller/cs213/papi
