Installation: How long?

Postby shaman.narayanasamy » Wed Jul 31, 2013 2:31 pm

Dear all,

I am installing PLASMA on my personal Kubuntu 13.04 machine.

Installation seems to be going fine until it starts the PLASMA installer (output below).

Code: Select all
========================================
  PLASMA installer is starting now. Buckle up!
========================================
Downloading PLASMA from http://icl.cs.utk.edu/projectsfiles/plasma/pubs/plasma_2.5.1.tar.gz
Package ./plasma_2.5.1.tar.gz already downloaded
Installing  plasma_2.5.1 ...
Writing make.inc... done.
Compiling PLASMA... Installation of PLASMA successful.
(log is in  /home/shaman/plasma-installer_2.5.1/build/log/plasmalog )
Compiling tests... done
Running PLASMA tests on 2 cores...(takes some time, feel free to grab a coffee!)
--> testing ... done

--> testing/lin...

As you can see, it is doing something, but it has been doing this for the past 12 hours! When I run "top" or "ps", it seems like everything is fine. Am I doing something wrong with the installation? Is this normal?

Here is what happens when I interupt using Ctrl+c:

Code: Select all
^C
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "./setup.py", line 70, in <module>
    sys.exit(main(sys.argv))
  File "./setup.py", line 65, in main
    plasma.resume()
  File "/home/shaman/plasma-installer_2.5.1/script/plasma.py", line 38, in resume
    self.down_install()
  File "/home/shaman/plasma-installer_2.5.1/script/plasma.py", line 263, in down_install
    (output, error, retz) = runShellCommand(comm, sys.stdout)
  File "/home/shaman/plasma-installer_2.5.1/script/utils.py", line 60, in runShellCommand
    (out, err) = proc.communicate()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 806, in communicate
    return self._communicate(input)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 1382, in _communicate
    stdout, stderr = self._communicate_with_poll(input)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/subprocess.py", line 1436, in _communicate_with_poll
    ready = poller.poll()
KeyboardInterrupt

This process can be long if you are using netlib implementations of BLAS and LAPACK, but shouldn't be so long.
Since the tests are using 2 threads, what do you observe when you do a top ? 100% or 200% of CPU are used ? If it is 100%, it might be a binding problem of your threads to the wrong cores. Check that the following command give your the path to hwloc:

Code: Select all
pkg-config --libs hwloc
