Catalog Servers

• Contain descriptions of resources (as distinguished from location information)

• Clients query catalog servers to learn:

  • characteristics of a resource
  • variant forms of a resource (text vs PostScript)
  • MD5 fingerprint of a resource
  • digital signature of description
  • Location-Independent File Name (LIFN) of a particular instance of a resource
