Re: External GPU on thunderbolt - and CUDA/MAGMA?

It seems using an eGPU - a Gaming Box apparently - is straightforward, using Ubuntu at least: https://egpu.io/forums/thunderbolt-linux-setup/egpu-in-blender-18-04-works-flawlessly/ It seems these "Gaming Boxes" are just a USB Thunderbolt to PCIe adapter, with a big power supply: https://www.amazon.c...

External GPU on thunderbolt - and CUDA/MAGMA?

I've mostly wandered away from scientific computing (on GPUs and generally), but I've just learned of external GPUs connected to laptops on USB-C Thunderbolt. I've searched this forum and find no mention of anyone attempting scientific computing on such a device (or even if linux supports external G...

Re: Sequential SVD computation for Big Data using MAGMA

Thanks for the reply and offer - I've been thinking about it. I had reached the same conclusion - that is, computations of an SVD in parallel is still an active area of research, computation in a sequential fashion is even more towards research, and implementing these on a GPU is even further out th...

Re: Problem compiling testing - magma_generate_matrix ?

The g++ version on this OpenSuse system is 4.8.5, but there is g++-6 on this system which is 6.2.1. I changed my make.inc to give g++-6, rather than the default, and it seems to be working fine now. For the record, changing nullptr to NULL did not work - it failed as before. The problem seems to be ...

Re: Problem compiling testing - magma_generate_matrix ?

By way of a perhaps constructive follow up, the specific error is as follows: g++ -O3 -fPIC -DNDEBUG -DADD_ -Wall -fopenmp -std=c++11 -DHAVE_CUBLAS -DMIN_CUDA_ARCH=300 -I/usr/local/cuda/include -I./include -I./testing -c -o testing/testing_ztrsm.o testing/testing_ztrsm.cpp testing/testing_ztrsm.cpp:...

Problem compiling testing - magma_generate_matrix ?

I seem to have a problem compiling the latest 2.3.0 magma. I have a standard opensuse system, using compiled openblas. It looks like magma itself compiles ok, but the testing part crashes at testing_ztrsm.cpp, complaining about "no matching function call to 'magma_generate_matrix...' That function i...

Sequential SVD computation for Big Data using MAGMA

I've been away from this forum for a while! I have a new 1080 ti and am contemplating putting it through its paces by computing a large SVD calculation. So large, it is likely to need a sequential strategy, if possible. I noted the recent paper "Out of Memory SVD Solver for Big Data" (Sept. 2017) on...

A correction to my benchmark discussion above. These benchmarks are rather slippery to get right. I'll just give the computation times for sgesv on 5000X5000 matrices: i7-3820 (3.6 GHz) cpu, titan black gpu ---------------------------------------------------- Matlab - single CPU: 6.28 s Matlab - GPU...

1.6.1, CUDA 7.0, GOTO2, SGESV, and Matlab R2014b (on linux)

Just to note that I compiled magma 1.6.1 without any issues using the GOTO2 blas and the beta CUDA 7.0. I managed also to compile my original mex test code to run sgesv on the gpu, with minimal effort. (needed a magma_init();) I've mostly been using Matlab's gpu capabilities lately because it is far...

Re: Calling MAGMA from MATLAB

I wrote a tutorial on matlab+cuda using mex files a few years ago: http://faculty.washington.edu/dushaw/epubs/Matlab_CUDA_Tutorial_2_10.pdf A little dated, but I think it is still valid, generally. Matlab's parallel processing toolbox has mostly superseded my laborious mex files, however. But it is ...
